When I rode into the carpark at Turingal Head a guy was walking back to his ute with his surfboard. "Any waves?" I asked. "Yeah... wodden too bad at all," he replied, with a little casual post-surf swagger.

When I got to the beach it was obvious why. Turingal often favours a bit of north in the swell direction to get it working, and that's how it was — clean head-high waves with the occasional bomb set rolling through. Four surfers were out enjoying the occasion and despite the pull in that direction I didn't have my board, so I settled into a comfortable spot in the dunes and focused on the peaceful scene in front of me.

The headland faces south and was well protected from the swell up in the corner, the ocean surging around the rocks in a gentle rhythm. The winter's day was chilly but still, the sun in and out, surfers coming and going as I painted, completing their respective shifts.

I finished, packed up, and rushed home to get my board.
