Bondi Lake is well off the beaten track, and not many visitors to Bournda National Park know it exists, let alone have made the journey to see it in all its wild beauty. As the freshwater lake retreats in times of drought, the exposed ground is colonised by an army of tea trees that grow up quickly — only to die when the drought breaks and the waters rise again, leaving a ring of bleached forms around the perimeter. The effect is quite stunning. Further up the bank, safe from the rising waters, older tea trees grow slowly until they too succumb to borer and old age, their ghostly remains framing the tranquility of the lake in silence.
