On a hot summer afternoon, with the sun low in a smoky sky, the gorgeous blue Kootenay River winds its way downstream past a steep embankment littered with the burnt trunks of a fire long past. Above them on the ridge stands the next generation — a defiant army of new growth pushing up through the ash. They are the epitome of resilience. And perhaps, in ways we don't fully understand, they know exactly what came before them — and what will come again.
