Just off the highway between Cann River and Orbost, a loop track drops into one of Victoria's most beautiful rainforest gullies. Here the Bemm and McKenzie rivers meet, and to celebrate the union old gnarly kanooka trees — water gums — grow prolifically along the river banks in a wonderful tangle. Moss blankets the forest floor and anything else it can get a hold of, ferns large and small fill the understorey, and the water running clear and fresh through it all tastes delicious straight from the river.

I left the track and made my way down to a hidden bend, setting up on a moss-covered log mid-stream with the river flowing all around me, while the odd sightseer wandered past above, unaware I was there.
