Back in 2016 I joined a surf trip to the Banyak Islands off Sumatra, aboard a boat called the Seriti, skippered by a Japanese surfer named Suzuki. Despite the promise of surfing multiple breaks across the archipelago, the boat spent nearly the entire trip anchored at a break called Treasure Island — or Treasures for short. Not that that was a bad thing. It was a consistent quality right-hander that held its shape no matter the swell size.
Living in close quarters with ten other guys plus crew had its moments, so whenever I needed space I'd ask the dinghy driver to drop me on the island, where I'd explore and paint. This is one of the works that came from those escapes.
