En route to Adelaide I pulled off the highway and headed north into desert country. To my surprise the road passed huge commercial potato farms — who would have guessed... Grass trees lined the way as the scrub gradually thickened into mallee wilderness. I aimed for a campsite and after setting up went for an explore of the loop track attached to the campground, which followed a ridge along the dunes with great views across the landscape. It was hot. I finally sat down in the ragged shade of a small shrub, noted the wallaby tracks in the sand beside me — the only signs of life other than the flies — and attempted to paint the rolling desert stretching to the horizon... under the interrogation of a swarm of flies.
