Bondi Lake is a lost pocket of Bournda National Park — a freshwater lake sitting quietly behind the dunes, barely known and almost forgotten. Yet it must have had a rich history for First Nations people who drank, swam and ate from its waters for thousands of years. There is plenty of white fella history here too. According to locals, cattlemen once watered their stock at the lake in times of drought and used it as a stopover on their way to the wharves, where the beasts would be shipped off to market. The surrounding land was cleared and farmed, and within its still fresh waters the odd fence post can still be seen rising between clumps of Tall Spike-rush — quiet reminders of a not so distant past. The deer that now roam Bournda drink here too, their hoof prints pressed into the mud at the water's edge, adding yet another chapter to the lake's long story.
