Inspired by a trip to Bali, this work depicts the epic surf break at an off-the-beaten-track outpost named Pantai Jasri. Sketched on location from one of the weird and wonderful structures built for the public by Charlie — a local expat chocolatier who could best be described as an eccentric enigma. After learning the Balinese belief that the gods live above the coconut palms (and therefore buildings should not exceed this height), Charlie went and built himself a towering structure with his sleeping quarters at the very top. "I want to sleep with the gods," he told me.
